Combining Precious Metal Clay™ and dichroic glass

The concept of fusing metal and glass is a very appealing one because of the contrast of silver to the brilliance of dichroic glass. The trick to making this technique successful is to be sure the bezel, made from Precious Metal Clay™ (PMC), is continuous.

Any break in the bezel will cause cracks in the glass to appear sooner or later. Setting the glass in a sheet of clay is fail-safe because the sheet is solid clay and will not break apart in firing.

• 10 grams of PMC+™
• PMC+ paste™
• PMC+ syringe™
• Dichroic glass piece about 15 x 20cm or smaller
• Small fine silver casting grains
• Work surface of glass or very smooth plastic
• Saran Wrap Classic® (this brand is highly recommended), used to cover the clay so it won’t dry out
• Small roller, about 1" x 6" with a smooth surface
• Olive oil
• Water
• Paper
• Pencil
• Scissors
• Deck of cards (used as guides to ensure an even thickness when rolling out PMC into a sheet)
• X-acto® knife
• Needle tool
• Coffee stirrers
• 4" x 5" sheet of thin Plexiglas
• Small paintbrush
• Files or salon nailboards
• Bullseye paper (a ceramic fiber paper that protects the back of the pendant during firing)
• Kiln
• Rotary tumbler
• Mixed stainless steel shot without pins
